Like most Huli Jings, Xue Mei is very sly and cunning. She is flamboyant and could be quite a tease at times. However, she has a high regard for the concepts of respect and honor and therefore is very obedient and more polite towards authority figures. She is also curious and open minded and enjoys trying out new things.

❊ H i s t o r y :

Rested on the snow covered peak of the Yulongxue Shan Mountain is an old temple, home to a clan of Huli Jings in service of the moon goddess, Chang E. But only a select few of these fox spirits who have pledged their allegiance to the goddess are able to join her divine council as her personal spies and gain their 9th tail. The chosen Huli Jings spend their entire childhood locked up in a chamber deep within the temple halls so they may hone their skill”s under the watchful Houyi, the goddess’ most trusted adviser and husband. The chosen fox spirits considered this to be the greatest honor to be bestowed upon them by the goddess but one lone Huli Jing begged to differ. Xue Mei was not all like the other chosens. She did not possess the powdery white fur that was common to her kin nor did she have the power to lurk and loom thoughts into human minds. But she possessed a unique skill that gained her the favor of the goddess, she was able to manipulate an individual’s emotions with the melodious tone of her voice and because of this Xue Mei was pushed to train harder than any of the other fox spirits. Many of the Huli Jing's envied the "special attention" she received but to Xue Mei this way of living is more of a curse than a blessing. She wanted to see the word beyond the dark temple chamber and experience what it was like to have her own adventure just as many of the "common fox spirits" have done.So during the full moon night of the 8th day of the lunar calendar, when all her fellow Huli Jings held a festival in honor of their mistress, the young Xue Mei was able to escape because of the negligence of the guards. She climbed down the mountain and ventured into a small village. In fear of getting caught by her guardians she snuck into a house of a scholar. Her entry was not the most subtle ones as it woke the scholar's son. The young boy looked shocked seeing the presence of what his father had deemed as nothing but a fairy tale and wanted to wake him up to show him the truth. But before he could leave Xue Mei offered him the ancient fox spirit's promise which was always honored by all Huli Jings, she promised to guide him and help him become an even greater scholar than his father. Thinking of all the honor this would bring to his family the boy agreed and thanks to his help Xue Mei was able to escape her duties for nearly a week. The boy, Yun was able to show her the simple joys in a life of a human from the sweet taste of Bingtang Hulu to the wonders books had to offer.But all good things have to come to an end as Chang'e has sent Lei Gong to fetch the stray fox spirit.

Lei Gong arrived before her and Yun and threatened to strike the poor boy if she were to put up a fight. Xue Mei could not stand the thought of her only friend being hurt so with a heavy heart decided to leave with the god of thunder
Xue Mei thought that she would never see Yun again but that was all before the war began. In the Zhou dynasty, a great power struggle began between the feudal lords of the east and western lands to gain the right of the mandate of heaven. The conflict was not only among the humans but the gods as well. With the constant bloodshed in the lands, the humans grew unyielding and forgot their duties towards the gods making them far more difficult to control. So Nüwa, the mother goddess told each of deities decided to seek a feudal lord they think is worthy of the mandate of heaven and control him to bring peace to their lands. If they would be able to accomplish this they would gain a special favor from her. Upon hearing this, Chang E put Xue Mei, now a 9 tailed Huli Jing and her highest ranking spy into action. But she was not the only one with spies at her disposal. Xi He, the sun goddess had long been the enemy of Chang E and decided to send out Xiao Dan to steal the heart of which ever feudal lord Xue Mei was sent to persue. In the middle of the night Xue Mei knocked infront of the feudal lord’s house pretending to be a lost girl. Captivated by Xue Mei's appearance the feudal lord took her in and after awhile made her one of his concubines and from there she manipulated him to do the bidding of her mistress but eventually Xiao Dan had also found her way into being one of his consorts as well. Their rivalry went on day and night until a particular young scholar arrived.

The scholar entertained the entire household with stories of scholarly pursuit inspired by a strange encounter with a fox spirit when he was a boy. Realizing that this scholar was Yun, her old child hood friend, Xue Mei wanted to reveal who she really was to him. But in fear of compromising her mission she kept the thought locked up and just settled with spending even a few brief moments with him. And these moment they have spent together their relationship grew more and more affectionate and soon they fell for each other . Seeing this all unfold, Xiaodan decided to use this for her advantage. She told the feudal lord of Xue Mei and Yun's "betrayal". The feudal lord then had Yun tortured then killed while forcing Xue Mei to watch. As she watched Yun breathed his last , she could no longer stand the pain her duties had caused her. In rage, she attacked and murdered the feudal lord and all who came to defend him (Xiao Dan being one of them). Realizing what she had done, Xue Mei fled far away from the feudal lord's home. But eventually the Chang'e, Lei Gong,Houyi and Xi he caught up to her and punished her for her crimes. The gods took away her 8 other tails, banished her from the realm of gods and mythical creatures and sealed away the destuctive part of her snow manipulation skills. Because of this Xue Mei was forced to wander aimlessly throughout the centuries searching for companionship and a new purpose. One day she heard a peculiar sound coming from deep within the forest. Out of curiousity, Xue Mei followed it and saw a huge circus tent filled with people and even creatures just as odd as her. Seeing this as as a new opportunity gifted to her by the gods, she soon signed up as one of the Sirens of the Cirque des Reves with high hopes that she would be able to find her new purpose and free her of her regret of her mistakes in the past by creating alluring music for all the world to here.

❊ M I S C/O t h e r I n f o r m a t i o n:
❄ The power to manipulate snow is a trait common to Huli Jings of Xue Mei's clan. (Kind of the reason why they serve the moon goddess cause of the goddesses association with yin/cold)
❄ Naturally Huli Jings can transform from one form to another but Xue Mei cannot because her tails being taken away from her. Which is also the reason why she still remains in the form of a 22 year old which was the form she assumed before her other tails were taken away.
❄ Her greatest regret is not being able to tell Yun who she really was but she was indirectly able to fulfill her promise to Yun on being a greater scholar than his father. It is because of their encounter that Yun was inspired to search for answers about the mythical world and eventually his research made him known thoughout the entire land as one of the greatest scholars on mythical lore. ((I didn't include this in the history part cause it speaks more about Yun than it does of Xue Mei so yeah...))
❄ Huli Jings are also said to be spirits of the dead that came back to life. So perhaps there's more to her history than what is stated about ^-^
